MATHEMATICS LESSON PLAN

Class 5 Maths Lesson Plan

Chapter 11: Measurement

Subtopics

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand standard units of length, mass, and capacity.
  • Perform conversions between different metric units.
  • Apply addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in measurement problems.
  • Solve real-life word problems involving measurements.
  • Understand Average
  • Develop a basic understanding of temperature and its measurement.

Procedure

  • Begin the lesson by discussing why standard units of measurement are necessary.
  • Explain the standard units — metre, gram, and litre — using examples from daily life (length of table, weight of fruits, capacity of bottles).
  • Demonstrate conversions using simple relations such as 1 metre = 100 cm, 1 litre = 1000 mL, etc.
  • Guiding students through examples of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of measurements on the board.
  • Explanation of meaning of Average
  • Discuss the concept of temperature with examples — body temperature, water boiling and freezing points.
  • Students will then solve textbook exercises: 11A (Conversion), 11B (Addition and Subtraction), 11.3 (Multiplication and Division), 11.4 (Average), and 11.5 (Temperature).

Activity

“I am a Unit of Length” Role Play

  • Form a group of 8 students to represent different metric units of length.
  • The shortest student will represent the smallest unit (millimetre) and the tallest will represent kilometre.
  • Each student introduces themselves, for example: “I am centimetre, 100 of me make a metre.”
  • One student holds a 1-metre scale as a prop.
  • The teacher’s table is measured to show the standard metre length practically.

Skill/Values

  • Teamwork and cooperation
  • Observation and practical understanding
  • Application of mathematical reasoning
  • Confidence in presentation

Assessment

  • Class discussion and oral questioning
  • Observation during activity
  • Completion and accuracy in textbook exercises (11A to 11.5)
