PHYSICS LESSON PLAN

ICSE Class 6 Lesson Plan, Chapter – Light and Shadow

by Speed Up Science

Date:07/10/25 to 24/10/25

Class: 6

No. of Periods:-4

Sub Topics

  • Introduction to Light
  • Sources of Light – Natural and Artificial
  • Transparent, Translucent, and Opaque Objects
  • Shadow Formation
  • Conditions for Shadow Formation
  • Parts of Shadow – Umbra and Penumbra

Learning Outcomes

  • Define light as a form of energy that enables us to see objects.
  • Differentiate between natural and artificial sources of light.
  • Explain how shadows are formed and identify conditions necessary for their formation.
  • Describe umbra and penumbra with suitable examples.
  • Demonstrate understanding through the puppet theatre activity.

Procedure

Introduction
Begin the lesson by asking ,if  switch off room' s light  asking, “Can we see anything ?” Then,  turn on a flashlight and point it , “Why can we see objects  then?” This will lead to the idea that  light is necessary to see objects and that objects which produce light are called Sources of light.

Teaching Steps:

  • Explain the definition of light as a form of energy that enables vision.
  • Discuss and list natural sources (Sun, stars, fireflies) and artificial sources (bulb, candle, torch).
  • Classify objects based on transparency: transparent, translucent, and opaque.
  • Introduce of  the concept of shadow formation – formed when an opaque object blocks light.
  • Explain the three conditions required for shadow formation:
    • A source of light
    • An opaque object
    • A screen to capture the shadow
    • Describe the parts of a shadow – umbra (dark region)  and  penumbra (lighter region)  using diagrams or visuals.
  • Conclude with a Puppet Theatre Activity demonstrated by students for the shadow formation and movement.

Activities

  • Puppet Theatre: Students use cut-out figures behind a white screen (chart paper or cloth) and a torch as a light source to create moving shadows.
  • Observation of shadow length and darkness by changing the distance of the torch.
  • Drawing and labeling parts of a shadow – umbra and penumbra.
  • Class discussion on how shadows change during different times of the day.

Values/Skills

  • Observation and creativity.
  • Scientific curiosity and reasoning.
  • Teamwork during puppet theatre activity.
  • Awareness of daily natural phenomena like sunlight and shadows.

Assessment

  • Question–Answer and discussion on sources of light and shadow formation.
  • Worksheet on natural/artificial sources and conditions for shadow formation.
  • Review through Rainbow Mindmap on “Light and Shadow.”
  • Puzzles and flash cards via Speed Up Science blog.
